Four episodes and one finished piece: a portrait framed by peonies and a poppy, with a toucan looking out of it. Freya paints each element on its own layer, in order, and never smooths away the texture that makes gouache look like gouache.
Gouache goes muddy when you fight the texture
Real gouache is flat, opaque and slightly rough. The instinct on an iPad is to smooth all of that away, and the result stops looking like gouache at all.
Freya works the other way round. The brush darkens as you repeat a stroke, so the shadows are built from the same colour rather than picked from a new one. The messy, bruised stage is expected — it gets blended, not avoided.

Thin brushes and thick brushes do different jobs
The set splits into Thin, Thick, Tip, Blender and Stamp. Knowing which does what is most of the technique.
Thin for skin and build-up
The Thin brushes let a little of the layer below show through, and darken where you paint over yourself. That is how the face gets its shadows without a second swatch.
Thick for solid, ridged colour
The Thick brushes lay down chunky opaque colour with a visible ridge at the edge. Freya paints the flowers solid with them rather than filling a shape, so the brush marks stay in the finished piece.
Alpha Lock instead of erasing
Lock the layer and the dark colour inside a petal cannot spill past its own edge — no masking, no cleaning up, no repainting the outline three times.
A ground that isn't white
The piece starts with a wall texture on Linear Burn, adjusted with Curves until it is grey but not too grey. Everything painted after that sits on a surface instead of floating on a blank canvas.
A layered way of working you can reuse on anything
One subject at a time, one named layer at a time, checked against the reference as you go.
Paint skin: overall tone first, then darken by repeating strokes, then blend with the smudge tool.
Build a bird's beak from yellow to orange to red, adding lines and light so it stays one object.
Give flowers depth with dark inside the petals, light on the folded edges, all inside Alpha Lock.
Use a pointed Tip brush for leaves, then push a little unexpected colour into the stems.
Finish with stamp brushes in the background and gradate them so they belong to the palette.
